Enoch Arnold Bennett fue un novelista, dramaturgo y periodista inglés, cuyas novelas y obras de teatro reflejaban, en general, la vida de la clase media del norte de Staffordshire. Nació en Hanley, Staffordshire (hoy parte de Stoke-on-Trent), hijo de un abogado. Se educó en Newcastle-under-Lyme. Al terminar sus estudios trabajó para su padre y, en su tiempo libre, ejerció el periodismo. A los veintiún años se mudó a Londres para trabajar como escribiente de un abogado. En 1889 ganó un concurso de escritura en la revista Tit-Bits y decidió dedicarse por completo al periodismo. En 1894 se convirtió en subdirector de la publicación Woman, para la que también empezó a escribir novelas por entregas. Su primera novela, A Man from the North, apareció en 1898, el mismo año en que asumió la dirección de Woman. En 1900 abandonó la revista y se trasladó a Hockliffe, en Bedfordshire, para dedicarse de lleno a la escritura. En 1903 se instaló en París, donde se integró en la comunidad de artistas y escribió varias novelas y obras de teatro. En 1908 publicó The Old Wives' Tale, que fue un gran éxito de ventas. En 1911 visitó Estados Unidos en un viaje muy divulgado por la prensa.
Su notable narrativa policíaca incluye The Loot of Cities (1905), seis relatos protagonizados por Cecil Thorold, un millonario detective canalla "en busca de la alegría", que no se detiene ante el chantaje ni el robo para atrapar a sus criminales. Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial fue director de propaganda para Francia en el Ministerio de Información. En 1918 rechazó el título de caballero.
