Naissance 26 September 1888 · Décès 4 January 1965

Thomas Stearns Eliot était un poète, dramaturge et critique littéraire américain, sans doute le poète de langue anglaise le plus marquant du XXe siècle.[3] Sa première publication notable, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, commencée en février 1910 et parue à Chicago en juin 1915, est considérée comme un chef-d’œuvre du mouvement moderniste.[4] Elle a été suivie par certains des poèmes les plus célèbres de la langue anglaise, parmi lesquels Gerontion (1920), The Waste Land (1922), The Hollow Men (1925), Ash Wednesday (1930), Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats (1939) et Four Quartets (1945). Il est également réputé pour ses sept pièces de théâtre, tout particulièrement Murder in the Cathedral (1935) et The Cocktail Party (1949).
