Katie, douze ans, vit avec son père, sa tante et ses cinq frères et sœurs dans une petite ville des années 1870. Elle prend sans cesse de bonnes résolutions pour devenir une personne bienveillante et généreuse, comme sa cousine Helen, qui est infirme, mais elle les oublie tout aussi vite. Lorsqu'elle-même se retrouve alitée après un accident, Katie trouve l'exemple de sa cousine très difficile à suivre.
