Michael Shaara (23 juin 1928 – 5 mai 1988) était un auteur américain de science-fiction, de romans sur le sport et de fiction historique. Né à Jersey City, dans le New Jersey, d'un père immigré italien (le nom de famille s'écrivait à l'origine Sciarra, que l'on prononce de façon similaire en italien), il obtint son diplôme de l'université Rutgers en 1951, où il rejoignit la fraternité Theta Chi, et servit comme sergent dans la 82e division aéroportée avant la guerre de Corée.
Avant de commencer à vendre des nouvelles de science-fiction à des magazines littéraires au cours des années 1950, Shaara fut boxeur amateur et policier. Il enseigna ensuite la littérature à l'université d'État de Floride tout en poursuivant son travail de romancier. Le stress lié à ce double engagement, ainsi que son tabagisme, provoquèrent chez lui une crise cardiaque à l'âge précoce de 36 ans, dont il se rétablit complètement. Son roman sur la bataille de Gettysburg, *The Killer Angels*, remporta le prix Pulitzer de la fiction en 1975. Shaara mourut d'une crise cardiaque en 1988, à l'âge de cinquante-neuf ans.
Les enfants de Shaara, Jeffrey et Lila, sont eux aussi romanciers. En 1997, Jeffrey Shaara créa le prix annuel Michael Shaara de l'excellence dans la fiction sur la guerre de Sécession, décerné au Gettysburg College.
