Richard Yates (3 février 1926 – 7 novembre 1992) était un romancier et nouvelliste américain, associé à l'« âge de l'angoisse » du milieu du XXe siècle. Son premier roman, *Les Noces rebelles*, fut finaliste du National Book Award en 1962. Son premier recueil de nouvelles, *Onze sortes de solitude*, lui valut des comparaisons avec James Joyce. Pourtant, cette reconnaissance critique ne se traduisit guère par un succès commercial de son vivant. L'intérêt pour son œuvre a toutefois repris depuis sa mort, en partie grâce à un essai influent de Stewart O'Nan paru en 1999 dans la *Boston Review*, à une biographie signée Blake Bailey en 2003, ainsi qu'au film *Les Noces rebelles* (2008), nommé aux Oscars et primé aux Golden Globes, avec Kate Winslet et Leonardo DiCaprio.
