French Exit by Patrick deWitt

I’ve been thinking about how to write something about this book that represents what I thought but isn’t unduly mean.

I guess maybe I can start with the positives: it’s a quick and easy read and generally not unpleasant. The prose is fine (certainly better than I can write). I was able to finish it off in a few short sittings.

I got the book because it was on some list of funny novels and I was in the market for a funny novel. Of course, what’s funny is notoriously subjective, but I didn’t laugh at any point. There were certain passages that were identifiably “clever” in the way that New Yorker cartoons are clever.

Who might enjoy this book? * People who attended prep schools and wear sweaters as accessories. * People who don’t actually like reading books but want to add a touch of sophistication to their living room (or drawing room).

3 stars for being a not unpleasant way to spend a few hours that will soon be forgotten.
