Stolen Focus review by Josh

Stolen Focus by Johann Hari

Review by Josh60/100Read December 26, 2023

Stolen Focus suffers, ironically, from a lack of focus. When the author mentioned at the end that he was friends with Naomi Klein I was not surprised. Fans of her work will likely enjoy this book. I’m not a fan of her work.

Three stars because there are glimmers of very interesting and important stuff here. Hari is, I think, correct tech has seriously damaged the human ability to focus and that is largely intrinsic to the business model of companies like Google. He interviewed a number of interesting people in writing (roughly 50% of sentences start with some variation on “[expert] told me”).

Overall, I spent about 12 hours on this book though, and I would like 8 of them back.

About the book

Is your ability to focus and pay attention in free fall? You are not alone. The average office worker now focuses on any one task for just three minutes. But it's not your fault. Your attention didn't collapse. It has been stolen. Internationally bestselling author Johann Hari shows twelve deep factors harming our focus. Once we understand them, together, we can take back our minds.
