Anthony Ryan nació en Escocia en 1970, pero pasó gran parte de su vida adulta viviendo y trabajando en Londres. Tras una larga carrera en la Función Pública británica, se dedicó a la escritura a tiempo completo después del éxito de su primera novela, Blood Song, primer libro de la trilogía La sombra del cuervo. Tiene una licenciatura en Historia, y entre sus intereses se cuentan el arte, la ciencia y la incansable búsqueda de la pinta perfecta de cerveza real.
