Peter Matthiessen fue un novelista, naturalista y escritor de temas silvestres estadounidense, además de agente de la CIA. Cofundador de la revista literaria The Paris Review, obtuvo el Premio Nacional del Libro en 2008. También fue un destacado activista ambiental. Su obra de no ficción abordó la naturaleza y los viajes, en particular El leopardo de las nieves (1978), así como los asuntos y la historia de los pueblos indígenas de Norteamérica, como un estudio detallado y polémico sobre el caso de Leonard Peltier, En el espíritu de Caballo Loco (1983).
