Philippe Jullian
Born 1919 · Died 1977
Philippe Jullian (born in Bordeaux on 11 July 1919 and died in Paris on 25 September 1977), born Philippe Simounet, was a writer, illustrator and engraver, and a chronicler of the society and art of his era. He was the grandson of the historian Camille Jullian and the great-grandson of the doctor Eugène Azam. He took his own life on 25 September 1977 in his Paris apartment. He had been devastated by the fire at his mill in Seine-et-Marne, which destroyed most of his collections.
His body of work consists of illustrations for a wide range of writers, among them Honoré de Balzac, Colette, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Ronald Firbank, Marcel Proust and Oscar Wilde. He also illustrated his own books in a grotesque and witty style, and published several essays on Art Nouveau and fin-de-siècle art.
