Quotes
“I am, I discover in late middle age, a work in progress.”
quoted in Samuel Moyn, "Intellectuals, Reason, and History: In Memory of Tony Ju “History is not written as it was experienced, nor should it be. The inhabitants of the past know better than we do what it was like to live there, but they were not well placed, most of them, to understand what was happening to them and why.”
The Burden of Responsibility: Blum, Camus, Aron, and the French Twentieth Century “If the era of political irresponsibility in France lasted from 1918 to 1958, the age of moral irresponsibility may be said to have begun in the mid-thirties and endured for the best part of four decades.”
The Burden of Responsibility: Blum, Camus, Aron, and the French Twentieth Century “Communism excited intellectuals in a way that neither Hitler nor (especially) liberal democracy could hope to match. Communism was exotic in locale and heroic in scale.”
Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945, Chapter 7 “Pace the self-congratulatory narrative that has entered the American public record, Washington did not ‘bring down’ Communism—Communism imploded of its own accord.”
Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945, Chapter 20
