Michel Houellebecq
Born 26 février 1956
Michel Thomas, known as Michel Houellebecq, is a French writer, poet, essayist and actor, born on February 26, 1956, in Saint-Pierre on La Réunion. He first drew attention with the novels *Extension du domaine de la lutte* (1994) and, above all, *Les Particules élémentaires* (1998), which brought him to a wide readership. This latter novel and his next book, *Plateforme* (2001), are regarded as forerunners in French literature, particularly for their portrayal of the emotional and sexual misery of the Western man in the 1990s and 2000s. With *La Carte et le Territoire*, Michel Houellebecq won the Prix Goncourt in 2010, after having been repeatedly tipped for the prize. His work has been translated into more than 40 languages.
Quotes
“You get used to terrorist attacks. France will hold on. The French will hold on, without even needing a “sursaut national,” a national pushback reflex. They’ll hold on because there’s no other way, and because you get used to everything. No human force, not even fear, is stronger than habit.”
