Javier Marías
Born 20 Sep 1951 · Died 11 Sep 2022
Javier Marías Franco (Madrid, 20 September 1951 – Madrid, 11 September 2022) was a Spanish writer, translator and editor. He was a member of the Real Academia Española from 2008 until his death.
His work *A Heart So White* (1992), which blends novel and essay, was a great success with both readers and critics. It was translated into dozens of languages, became one of the reference points of so-called generic hybridity, and established him as a writer.
His next novel, *Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me* (1994), received major prizes in Europe and the Americas, including the Rómulo Gallegos Prize (the first time this award was given to a Spaniard) and the Fastenrath Prize of the Real Academia Española.
Quotes
“Life is a very bad novelist. It is chaotic and ludicrous.”
