About this book

*Nada* is the first novel by Carmen Laforet, a writer from Barcelona, and one of the most important literary works of twentieth-century Spain. It is an existentialist work that portrays the stagnation and poverty of the Spanish postwar period, during the early years of Franco's regime. With a literary style that brought renewal to the prose of its time, *Nada* also reflects the gradual decline of the petite bourgeoisie after the Civil War.

The protagonist is Andrea, a young orphan who, just after the Spanish Civil War ends, moves to the city of Barcelona to study and begin a new life. When Andrea arrives at her grandmother's house, which she remembers only from her childhood, her hopes are shattered.
