Immanuel Kant
Born 22 April 1724 · Died 12 February 1804
From Königsberg, Brandenburg-Prussia, German Empire · Nationality: Kingdom of Prussia
Immanuel Kant was an 18th-century German philosopher from the Prussian city of Königsberg. Kant was the last influential philosopher of modern Europe in the classic sequence of the theory of knowledge during the Enlightenment beginning with thinkers John Locke, George Berkeley, and David Hume.
Kant created a new perspective in philosophy which had widespread influences on philosophy continuing through to the 21st century. He published important works on epistemology, as well as works relevant to religion, law, and history. One of his most prominent works is the Critique of Pure Reason, an investigation into the limitations and structure of reason itself. It encompasses an attack on traditional metaphysics and epistemology, and highlights Kant's own contribution to these areas. The other main works of his maturity are the Critique of Practical Reason, which concentrates on ethics, and the Critique of Judgment, which investigates aesthetics and teleology. 1
Quotes
“Human reason has this peculiar fate that in one species of its knowledge it is burdened by questions which, as prescribed by the very nature of reason itself, it is not able to ignore, but which, as transcending all its powers, it is also not able to answer.”
Critique of Pure Reason “Abbot Terrasson tells us that if the size of a book were measured not by the number of its pages but by the time required to understand it, then we could say about many books that they would be much shorter were they not so short.”
Critique of Pure Reason “The light dove, cleaving the air in her free flight, and feeling its resistance, might imagine that its flight would be still easier in empty space.”
Critique of Pure Reason “It is therefore correct to say that the senses do not err — not because they always judge rightly, but because they do not judge at all.”
Critique of Pure Reason “Morality is not properly the doctrine of how we may make ourselves happy, but how we may make ourselves worthy of happiness.”
