How Drenai begins

Legend is David Gemmell's 1984 heroic fantasy novel and the first book of his Drenai stories. It follows Druss, an aging axeman whose reputation has outlived his youth, as he is drawn into the defence of Dros Delnoch, a mountain fortress that holds back invaders from the east. Readers come to it for its battle scenes, its older protagonist, and its plain, hard-edged telling of heroism.

Druss is a veteran warrior, now past his prime, who is known across the Drenai lands as a legend. When a frontier fortress comes under threat, he is drawn back into the fighting and into the company of soldiers who both admire and doubt him.
