How Vlad Taltos begins
Jhereg is the first novel in Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos series, a fantasy told by an assassin who works for a criminal organization in the imperial city of Adrilankha. It is read for its wry first-person voice, its crime-novel plotting, and a secondary world that treats its magic and politics as ordinary daily business.
Vlad Taltos is an Easterner, a human living among the long-lived Dragaerans who rule the empire. He is a professional killer for the House of Jhereg, the criminal organization named after its sigil creature, and he takes contracts the way other people take jobs. The novel opens on his ordinary working life in the capital.
